So I got it. “Take five” dotted half note gets three beats followed by 4 eight notes. So the count 123 4and 5 and so on. Dotted half note followed by four 16th note followed by a quarter note goes like this: 123 foureanna five and so on.

Looking at “Take Five”. 5/4 time, Quarter note gets a beat, 5 beats to a measure. How do I count it?

Hi John,
I use the sax seat all the time when I’m practicing. I find that holding the sax on my right side with the bottom of the horn resting on its little pad works best. No pressure on my neck. Side D is easy to play. Holding the sax between my legs reaching Side D tends to move the horn. Right now I’m practicing “Long as I can See the…[Read more] -

Inspired by Mike Potter to tackle “You never can Tell” for the zint number of times and again I put it away for later. I have it in many keys. Johnny’s is the best. So C’est la vie for another time

Inspired by Mike Potter I again checked out Johnny’s sheet music. I played it in D major; I played it in G major, F major, C major and I used Chuck Berry’s sheet music. In every key the last measure, last two measures never sounded right. The small solo parts were right. The song is in 4 parts. The 4th part in G major sounded right, ie the last…[Read more]

Re: the backing track. I can play the sheet music for “The Way We Were” but I can’t play the sheet music along with the backing track. I do better playing along with Dave Koz and Vanessa Williams and reading the music

In my study of “reading” music I came across a rendition of “The Way We Were” as recorded by Dave Koa and Vanessa Williams. The first 33 bars are in the key of “C” major for tenor sax. The music changes to “Ab” major in bar 35 all the way till the end. With no lyrics I tend to get lost. So I pull up the video on YouTube…[Read more]

Johnny;
I’m working on one of your early releases. “In The Mood”. You might want to do a lesson on “In The Moon”. I noticed the sheet music does not have the phrase “arr. Johnny Ferreira: http://www.HowToPlaySaxophone.org”
So today it’s Glenn Miller’s “In The Mood” -

I left the cane reeds some time ago and found the carbon onyx reeds to be reliable 100%. So now I’m playing Leanard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” using a medium soft carbon onyx reed with my Guardala King mouthpiece. Cheers

In about a year I might have it. I’ve been working on it since November 2019

Since I made a change in mouthpieces I’m making some progress. I switched from my Guardala fiber carbon mouthpiece to my Guardala metal fatboy and the low Bb was easier to blow coming off the middle Bb. I’m blowing one of Johnny’s music pieces in Bb. Catch you on the flip side when the fat lady sings
