Hemp Reed

This reed was constructed on the same idea as the Carbon Fiberreed but instead of weaving in carbon fibers, he weaves in hemp fibers. These give it a darker and earthier sound which is a great contrast to the first two of his Fiberreeds. Another interesting fact is that 80% of this reed is actually made from natural and organic materials and it’s sound and feel is more comparable to a cane reed.

I have only been learning the alto for about six months and have been struggling with reeds, being a beginner I was never sure if it was the reed or my embouchure at fault. Some reeds warped and some cracked and thats ok at least you can see that something is wrong but some just don’t play any good and buying a box for $50 AU and only getting 50% usable and for how long was frustrating me.
I sent an email to Johnny asking for advice and couldn’t believe how quickly he responded, he suggested I try a couple of the synthetic reeds that he endorses.
At nearly $100 AU to get two reeds posted to OZ and being a pensioner it was a bit of a gamble but I figured after wasting money on cane reeds I would give it a go.
Wow I couldn’t be happier, my personal preference is for the hemp reed in medium soft as Johnny recommended, is sounds earthy and is easy to play,
I have improved my playing heaps in just a few weeks and learnt a lot about my embouchure as the reed is so stable and always the same, thats got to be a big thumbs up for a learner and best of all is I can leave it on my sax and its ready to go, no soaking and setting the reed up every time you want to play or practice just pick up the sax and play even if its only for 5 or 10 minutes when I’m walking past my old alto two or three times a day.
Very convenient, sounds great and is truly helping me learn.
Thanks Johnny for the great advice.
    David.
