yes of course Michael, everybody’s different sax player or not. funny a guy selling you reeds is asking this. maybe he was hoping to sell you a “pro-level horn”.
Starting out most of us simply want to be able to play the thing. Loving the sound of the instrument so much, taking a few years to be able to play it, man, that’s a great accomplishment and feeling.
When starting out as a teenager I didn’t even consider playing music was an option since everyone around me was learning a trade. when I realized a little later, ya sure, I started getting much more focused and practiced more after realizing that maybe I could make my living just with this instrument I love to play so much.
It worked out somewhat for me but I’d never encourage anyone to go that direction…it’s hard and you need a lot of luck and breaks no matter how good you are.
Stan Getz, the well-known saxophonist was asked a similar question in an interview once regarding what advice would you give to a younger person hoping to get into the game professionally, his response was; if you have a 2nd option then go for that 2nd option, not the pro sax player route. why? because one should only go for the 1st option when there is no 2nd option. It’s like that old saying, a musician, actor, artist etc should have something to “fall back on”. it’s when you have nothing to fall back on that you have the best chance to make it happen.

The question came up when I was looking for Vandoren ZZ reeds for Alto Sax and they didn’t have any so I had to settle on the standard Vandoren reeds that come in the Blue Box. They had one box left of Java Greens 2.5 and picked them up but they had plenty of 3.0–too thick for me. Seems like I’m better off going through Amazon for all my reeds. Funny you mention about trying to sell me a pro-level horn because I had made the comment I have 2 new Trevor James Saxophones coming now in March and needed new reeds (yes, I do need new reeds, not just buying them because I have new Saxophones coming LOL) I’m paying for them ANY DAY now–just waiting for direct deposit into my account and the guys at Massullo are on “stand by”….. he did ask me if I would like to take a look at their Saxophones here but told him I was already taken care of and chose Trevor James……….Yes, I know Yamaha, Selmer, etc.. makes great Saxophones. What’s wrong with preferring Trevor James instead? I personally have talked with a guy on youtube who operates a nice channel called “Music Education for All” and he’s looking at the Trevor James line of Saxophones too–said he sent a message to Massullo and was just waiting to hear from them; not sure what model of Sax he’s looking at.

Thanks for relaying those experiences of your’s and Stan’s—I am definately a 2nd option person and you said something important that you loved playing the Saxophone so much and that’s the point I tried to convey….what difference does it make what level I’m at? I don’t even know and I don’t think about that either. It just seems like folks now days can tend to forget what plain-ole’ fashion FUN is all about! I don’t think ANYONE starts off thinking “hey, I want to make a living at this someday”. That’s one of the great things about music in general is that beginner’s/student players like so many of us are can enjoy the Saxophone just as much as a pro player…it supposed to be about fun and enjoyment. If I’m still alive 10-20 years from now, who knows what level of playing I’ll be at…don’t think anybody knows where they’ll be at in their playing 10 years from now. I’m just trying to have fun and I’ll continue to have fun with it……I wanted to learn to play for over 17 years! LOL

lol – everyone has their reasons for playing the Sax! Don’t judge someone till you’ve walked in their shoes!
My reason & i’d love to hear other peoples reasons as well!
At 56 i’m playing the Sax cause i luv playin the Sax!
At my time of life i’ve got no interest in going round clubs & playing the Sax and trying to become the next kid on the block!
But seriously there is a deeper reason – i wan’t a hobby that is fun, interesting & challenging – to keep my mind active and stop me from going insane!
Lots of people my age do crosswords etc.. to keep there mind active! Learning music theory is one way for me to keep mentally active, the breathing must have some benifits as well as i’ve noticed my singing has improved since i took up the sax!
Anything that stops me from becoming a couch potato!
The grade 2 certificate i’ve got i value more than any of my educational certificates – all the other stuff i’ve achieved in life i had to do not because i wanted to do them.
