Well Done Johnny – I’m glad you tidied up the Altissimo course – it’s a lot better without everyone’s comments ( i was going to suggest you remove them!)
March 16, 2015 at 10:07 am #13773thanks guys, we’re still kinda in the middle of it and so not everything is coming up the way it should with all the updates etc but looks like some of it’s there.
March 16, 2015 at 10:51 am #13774WOW, what a surprise! AWESOME job Johnny! Man, have you been busy or what?!? That’s a REALLY cool promotional video too on your homepage. Do you have an estimate, more or less, as to how many hours it took to revamp your site? Did you do it yourself or contract it out? It would be good for all of us to remember that donations towards Johnny’s site is a great way to support all of his hard work…I’ll get you a donation for sure some time this week Johnny—I intended on doing so regardless; that was very awesome of you to help me recover those lost files. Good news is that we have a new labtop cpu with Cyberlink Audio Software coming around this weekend. For all my practical purposes, I don’t think I need anything as “advanced” like Pro-Tools editing software. Isn’t Pro-Tools used exclusively for Mac computers?
Great job on your website Johnny! 🙂March 16, 2015 at 11:53 am #13775Thanks Michael, I go the new theme in February and have been working on it now for about 4 weeks. There is also some more techy stuff that I hired people to do. It’s not all up yet…only about half the pages…even this forum will be updated.
Pro Tools works on windows as well.March 16, 2015 at 1:11 pm #13776Wow, sounds like there’s a lot coming; that’s a lot of work! We’re all very grateful to you and your work Johnny, without your site many of us would probably not be able to learn how to play. For some reason I had never seen howtoplaysaxophone.org on facebook but I didn’t know your site was on facebook, but my wife went there today and saw it (can’t believe it’s been there this whole time! shame of me LOL) So she clicked like and put a small post on your facebook page for this website. I don’t use facebook due to time, besides my wife and kids have their page so that’s enough for me.
Thanks for the heads up on Pro Tools, I didn’t know they made it for Windows. I like the “portability” of a labtop cpu…..it will help for upcoming projects. With all of the Digital technology out now, it’s amazing to see so much high quality recording software/equipment that we have available for very reasonable prices.March 16, 2015 at 2:03 pm #13777I used pro tools on my little mac powerbook, it was great…record anywhere, I even mixed a couple songs on a flight from Vancouver to Frankfurt with the laptop on my lap. very convenient.
Pro tools can be a little difficult in some ways, with the operating system, version etc. I tried to switch over to Apple Logic but couldn’t go for it, love pro tools even with it’s difficult points. Oh ya, I created the howtoplaysaxophone facebook page years ago. I sometimes go on there and respond to emails etc. some people just like to hang out on facebook so that’s the reason. It’s here:
https://www.facebook.com/HowToPlaySaxophone
great Meandy gave us a like on there! anybody that also feels like doing so would be great to help with the votes on there….I just checked and saw there’s 105 likes. not a lot but I don’t push it in any way, just happens naturally.March 16, 2015 at 2:38 pm #13778Maybe, as a suggestion, in your next e-mail that you send out to all members it could be a good thing to mention that howtoplaysaxophone.org is on facebook–I was under the impression that it wasn’t because when I first started learning from you/your site I used facebook a lot and I can remember looking for it on facebook. Instead, facebook directed me to some other strange page that had nothing to do with you…we all know how technology can be. It’s safe to say that other members don’t know your site is on facebook too and that can help to spread your site around when they click the like button, share it on their home page, etc.. My wife mentioned now that we know your site is on facebook, when I do video uploads she will make sure to “tag” your facebook page, mention it on the description, etc., to help others become aware of it on facebook. Alerting members to your facebook page in your next e-mail could also help others connect with each other…when Jake and I did our duet that would have helped for sure–we most certainly are going to do another one with him on Bari and me on Tenor. But we also plan to re-do “And I love her” because of some of the “sour” notes that we had in our backing playing but now we have a FAR greater understanding of major/minor intervals, etc……thanks to your lessons anyway 🙂

Thanks for putting up a music theory Forum Johnny!
looking forward to picking up any tips from other peoples questions!
Restarting the Altissimo course this week – but will have to do a lesson a month due to all the other sax stuff i’m doing!
Had to sit down and spend an hour prioritising my sax work as i’ve got roughly 10 different sax projects on the go. Managed to find some tips on how to learn to play a new song & was shocked to find i need to get the key scales/ chord theory out of the way – a lot of it drags in knowledge of music theory! So for the time being i’ve lifted out of it anything i can use that i’m familiar with.
The results of putting in a systematic approach has improved my shoddy approach to learning a new song!March 16, 2015 at 3:03 pm #13780Scales and chords are just simply a MUST–there’s no getting around it and that’s the bottom line. Without a knowledge of these things, we can never learn to Improvise, play the songs we like, etc. At my current pace, I’m looking to have a REALLY good understanding of the lessons in Killer blues and be able to play those lessons, licks, riffs in any key I want by around sometime in the fall–I started working on it last fall so that will equate to year in this book alone! Once that happens then I can see moving on to Johnny’s next course that he’s working on right now.
Sxpoet: Take your time in Johnny’s Altissimo course and don’t move on to the next thing until you have mastered the previous lesson. I think sometimes we can “get in a hurry” because we want to be able to play those high notes so badly and we become impatient, start skipping around, looking online for those “secret” fingering positions, etc. without even giving a course like Johnny’s a chance in the first place. Believe me…it works so—remember this video I shared with everyone on Johnny’s blog?
March 16, 2015 at 5:41 pm #13781the theory section went up and back down…not as I wanted it and am doing too much right now. it’s something that will be up soon tho.
good video Michael! you’re really happy in it, as you should be! it’s a great feeling and was for me as well many years ago. -
