well, he may have not even played the sax much…he was primarily an inventor and instrument maker. he played flute and clarinet and created a patent for the bass clarinet before going on to inventing the saxophone. From what I’ve read and for what he is ultimately famous for was not his playing, but for his creativeness when it came to improving upon existing instruments and finally inventing the saxophone…something we’re all very grateful for, but since they didn’t record back then we’ll never really know!

WOW, this is a cool post to put here on the forum, thanks for getting the mental “gears” going for me Ammin_Eillis, I never even thought about that question. I would have loved to have met Adophe Sax! 🙂 I’ve got an 8 x 10 black/white picture of Adolphe Sax that is going in a frame and on the wall in our new home, along with lots of other pictures of famous Saxophone players–different sizes, colors, etc.. Rock and roll Saxophone in the 1800s…wow 🙂 I’ve heard stories of the flat 5 on a blues scale being called “The Devil’s note” and that for some time it was forbidden to play a flat 5 in churches. According to one source I read that some people were even EXECUTED for writing music with a flat 5! It was said that this note was, according to wikipedia.org, “oppressive, scary, evil.”

JOHNNY: Thanks much for the autographed pic. you sent me–going to look great on my new wall of “Saxophone fame” 🙂 Was that picture taken during your touring days?
