oh ya that’s a big beautiful tone! no wonder he gigged with all the big names in the 50’s rock and roll scene.
I got a chance to meet him here in Vancouver one night when he played with the California rock group “The Blasters”
But stupid me I never did get into what he played on etc.
He also recorded with “The Stray Cats” during this 80’s rockabilly revival.

I didn’t even know this song existed until I heard it on the radio about a week ago. I stopped what I was doing and made sure to write it down on a piece of paper LOL What stands out most to me about most of Lee Allen’s playing is not just his tone, but a lot of the licks/riffs he put into his playing were pretty simple licks. I think he’s a great example of how keeping it simple is what makes things sound good and I’ve had to drill that into my head LOL He’s from Louisiana as you know–just 2 1/2 hours from where I live here in Little Rock–and his playing is still really popular down here, along with the stuff he did with Fats Domino whose from New Orleans. Below is a couple of other songs of his that folks really love down here, I plan to learn to play them. Sometime in the future, you should think about doing “Walking with Mr.Lee”…killing song 🙂
King Curtis and Junior Walker’s stuff is very popular here too, I guess that’s why their stuff has had a big influence on me LOL I really do feel fortunate to live in a region of the US where all of these great players come from, the Southern US. There’s just something really distinct about the way these guys honk on the Saxophone 🙂 When you hear this kind of stuff all the time, it tends to grow on you!
Hey Johnny, it’s funny you mention the Stray Cats…one of my uploads was of a song I decided to play on Tenor Sax “Stray Cat Strut”. The Blues Scale for Improvising worked perfectly over this song. It was going to be one of my first ones I was going to upload here. These next 60-100 days are going to be eating away at me….
