      ALTO REED

      Says FB The ’60’s & early ’70’s Detroit rock scene ~~ Performing on the left with the Lansing-based Ormandy band at Gallup Park in Ann Arbor, early seventies…and on the right with the Silver Bullet Band at Ann Arbor’s Crisler Arena in 1976, this is saxophonist Tom Cartmell, best known to the music world as Alto Reed. Cartmell was born in Detroit and lived in the city until the family moved to St Clair Shores. He took up music quite young, initially playing trumpet, and switching to saxophone around the time he entered high school. He graduated from Lake Shore High. His rock & roll style was evident during his time with the Ormandy band, flamboyant but always musical. Tom co-wrote and played on Ormandy’s regional 1970 hit tune, ‘Good Day’. Cartmell began performing with Bob Seger in the early seventies, playing on the ‘Back in 72’ album. By 1974 Tom/Alto Reed (It was Seger who gave Reed his stage name) was performing with the newly formed Silver Bullet Band…an association that would endure through Seger’s final show in 2019. Along that road, Alto Reed performed with a lot of artists. A short list includes Grand Funk Railroad, Dave Mason, Mick Fleetwood, the Ventures, Little Feat, Spencer Davis, Ted Nugent, and Foghat. Cartmell contributed music to a couple of Jeff Daniel’s films, and was a regular feature at sporting events, playing the National Anthem. His spotlight performance on the Seger song ‘Turn the Page’ is considered a classic of the genre. Tom also fronted his own bands, like the Blues Entourage, the Reed-Dickinson Band, and Motor City Allstars. In 2012 he was inducted into the Canadian Blues Hall of Fame. Cartmell would succumb to cancer in 2020…he was seventy-two years old. May 16th marks the 77th birthday of Thomas Cartmell/Alto Reed.

          CONCERT PITCH

          ~~~~~~ / ~~~~~~
          A concert blues in D-flat major follows a 12-bar blues progression using chords like D♭7, G♭7, and A♭7. The main notes in the D♭ major blues scale are D♭, E♭, F, F♯, A♭, and B♭. This is equivalent to playing a standard blues in the key of E♭ for B♭ instruments and a blues in the key of B♭ for E♭ instruments.
              Wow, mommy’s kissing Santa Claus
              I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus
              Underneath the mistletoe last night
              She didn’t see me creep
              Down the stairs to have a peep
              She thought that I was tucked up in my bedroom, fast asleep
              Then I saw mommy tickle Santa Claus
              Underneath his beard so snowy white
              Oh, what a laugh it would have been
              If daddy had only seen mommy kissing Santa Claus last night
              He saw mommy kissing, kissing, kissing Santa Claus
              I did, I really did see mommy kissing Santa Claus
              And I’m gonna tell my dad
              Then I saw mommy tickle Santa Claus
              Underneath his beard so snowy white
              Oh, what a laugh it would have been
              If daddy had only seen mommy kissing Santa Claus last night
              Oh, what a laugh it would have been
              If daddy had only seen mommy kissing Santa Claus last night
              I did, I did, I really did see mommy kissing Santa Claus
              You gotta believe me, you just gotta believe me
              Come on, fellas, believe me, you just gotta believe me
                  Lyrics
                  Two, three, four
                  One, two, three
                  Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk
                  I’m a woman’s man no time to talk
                  Music loud and women warm, I’ve been kicked around
                  Since I was born
                  And now it’s all right, it’s okay
                  And you may look the other way
                  But we can try to understand
                  The New York Times’ effect on man
                  Whether you’re a brother or whether you’re a mother
                  You’re stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive
                  Feel the city breakin’ and everybody shakin’
                  And we’re stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive
                  Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive
                  Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive
                  Ah when you want
                  Well now, I get low and I get high
                  And if I can’t get either, I really try
                  Got the wings of heaven on my shoes
                  I’m a dancin’ man and I just can’t lose
                  You know it’s all right, it’s okay
