i like them both, the Yani sounds a bit
more lively sort of more jazzy – probably
to do with the setup.
I don’t know anything about martin sax’s
but i do know martin guitars are very good,
with the guitars you either like them or you
don’t.
The Yani – judging from my local music shop are
rated above yamaha, but that could be sales talk.
If you go on youtube some of these sax players
that play the blues, prefer vintage sax’s to get
an authentic sound.
The only thing to do is to go an try some new sax’s
and see if they are any different. for that kind of
investment i wouldn’t be in a great hurry.
Given the choice of buying a modern sax and a
vintage sax, if they both sounded the same, i
would pick the modern one. just thinking in
terms of repairs etc…

No chance Tim. That is not me but the guy I was going to buy a sax. I hope to sound like that one day. Actually I have turned to a rental tenor sax for the next few months as I can’t find the one I am after right now and unfortunately Paypal hangs on to your money for a month so although I have sold my alto two weeks ago the cash isn’t mine til after xmas! So I am renting a student model Jupiter for $40 a month for now and been playing it for two days. Wow, what a different feel and sound. Noticed immediately I could easily play right up to high F# and down to Bb as well with ease that was somewhat more challenging on the alto. The sound from the Jupiter screams “student” though I did improve it slightly sith a different lig but at least I can spend some time now working on MP /reed combo for when I buy my dream sax in a few months.

Johnny, it was exactly this week last year I recommitted to playing sax for sure and you and your site are largely responsible for getting me to where I am one year later, playing multiple scales and many songs fluently so for that I am eternally grateful and I am keen to see where I am at this time next year. So Merry Xmas to you for all you do.

Glad to hear it Dazza! Renting can be a great idea, I mean 40 bucks a month is good for a way to affordably try out different horns.
I would like to see how you are doing after another year. Remember to stay focused as I recommend in the “Daily Practice Routine”. 30 minutes a day with that type of practicing really adds up over the months as you hopefully will discover.

Thanks Johnny. I will add to the blog as soon as I get my chops around this bigger horn! I didn’t realise it was so much larger than the alto. Even with the student model I really love the upper register so much more than the alto. I have just been playing the alto key on the tenor for now to get the feel and most don’t sound too bad at all. Cant play along with the track of course but still enjoyable. Playing the g blues really sounds cool on the tenor. in fact everything does! Cant half tell I am a convert well and truly. Thanks to you I applied the same daily routine to a weights training fitness program in the past few weeks and its really paying off. Climbing those little mountains and succeeding and noticing steady results is the same as the progress I made on the sax with your guidance so cheers to you for implanting that in my psyche.

Nice one Dazza–lookin’ forward to hearing you “blow your brains out” on the Tenor and you’ll have fun on it for sure. It’s easier to play in the higher register on the Tenor, but you’ll also find it to be harder to play in the lower register than the Alto. Have you decided which Tenor you’re going to get?
