        Lyrics
In the day we sweat it out on the streets
        Of a runaway American dream
At night we ride through the mansions of glory
        In suicide machines
Sprung from cages on Highway 9
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected, and steppin’ out over the line
Oh, baby this town rips the bones from your back
        It’s a death trap, it’s a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we’re young
‘Cause tramps like us, baby, we were born to run
        Yes, girl, we were
Wendy, let me in, I wanna be your friend
I wanna guard your dreams and visions
Just wrap your legs ’round these velvet rims
And strap your hands ‘cross my engines
Together we could break this trap
We’ll run ’til we drop, baby, we’ll never go back
Oh, will you walk with me out on the wire?
‘Cause, baby, I’m just a scared and lonely rider
But I gotta know how it feels
I want to know if love is wild
Babe, I want to know if love is real
        Oh, can you show me
        Beyond the Palace, hemi-powered drones
        Scream down the boulevard
Girls comb their hair in rearview mirrors
And the boys try to look so hard
The amusement park rises bold and stark
Kids are huddled on the beach in the mist
I wanna die with you, Wendy, on the street tonight
        In an everlasting kiss
The highway’s jammed with broken heroes
On a last chance power drive
Everybody’s out on the run tonight
But there’s no place left to hide
Together, Wendy, we can live with the sadness
I’ll love you with all the madness in my soul
Oh, someday, girl, I don’t know when
We’re gonna get to that place
Where we really wanna go and we’ll walk in the sun
But ’til then, tramps like us
Baby, we were born to run
        Oh honey, tramps like us
Baby, we were born to run
Come on with me, tramps like us
Baby, we were born to run

Johnny love the way you play “Born to Run”, especially that sax solo section, incredible skill and precision I can only dream of playing that well.

“The Clarence Clemons solo is another great example of what we can do with this great, simple pentatonic scale, both major and minor but in this case it’s the major.

Below you have the solo transcribed for both alto and tenor. Also, you have the major scale of the key it’s in and beside that the pentatonic scale used for the solo.

            Important points from the video;
If you have a problem playing any parts of this solo because of all the sharps, go back and practice my “Awesome Major Scale Exercise” in this key. You’ll find those exercises near the end of the Beginners Complete Guide section.”

The passage “Lorem ipsum …” is taken from text that reads, “Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit …,” which translates as, “There is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain…”

“Born To Run Sax Part as Played by Clarence Clemons

This is some bonus material that wasn’t part of the sax solo lesson. I spent so much time with the backing track to make it work for the solo section that I figured we might as well get more use from it so here it is.

Fun to play along with since you get a backing track with everything except sax. Also a valuable lesson on how a sax player in a band might approach playing a background role as the band’s only saxophone player. Go here

The Sax Part, Studio Version and Live Version

On the original studio recording from 1975, Clemons overdubbed the sax. There are at least one tenor and a bari and possibly a 2nd tenor. This is obvious because of the chords you can hear, although mixed quite low amid this pretty large band; drums, bass, 3 guitar players doing multiple tracks, and layered keyboard tracks.

If you heard this song on a tiny car radio when it came out you’d probably only notice there was a sax solo in the middle of the song but that’s about it. He actually played sax parts throughout. There are certain live recordings that show this (some better than others).

I ran across one that you can actually hear every note he plays on sax throughout the song and I’ve included it below.

Ya Leo you can do it. It’s only 5 notes. Just break it down and work on it, you’ll get it!
