Forgot to add – some people recommend after playing a reed, to soak the reed for a couple of minutes in a very diluted hydrogen peroxide solution (9 parts water 1 part hydrogen peroxide).
They argue that your saliva starts to decay the fibres of the reed and shortens its life expectancy. I haven’t tried this out yet!
