What is the advantage of using a larger tip opening – aside from allowing one to use a softer reed? Do you gain more versatility in sound? Is the sound fuller, perhaps? I’m using a 7* metal Otto link type. I’ve been playing for about 8 months. If there are genuine advantages to “graduating” to a larger opening, how does one determine when to make the move?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Well, your instructor who listens to you periodically could advise on that. Aside from that, you have to try it for yourself and see if it feels and sounds better. But you are correct, the advantages are a bigger sound in the end.
