Transposing

Hi Johnny,
I hope you had a good week. I have a question regarding transposing. If I have a piece written for piano in the key of C major and wanted to transpose it for Alto Sax is do you add or subtract 3 semitones? If I go -3 that then makes the piece A major.
I also found this same piece for piano/vocal/guitar in the key of A minor. If I transpose this correctly what will my Key for Alto be ? C minor3 flats or F# minor 3 sharps?
