Monitoring

Hi Johnny, finally played my first sax gig last night. It went well but I struggled to hear myself. I was playing with a rock band which had two guitars, bass and drums. The sax and vocals were in the floor monitors but I was over blowing sometimes just to hear what I was playing.
I’ve looked around on the web and seen everything from small personal monitors , in-ear wireless systems and Perspex sound reflectors.
I’ve got another gig in two weeks time so I want to get something sorted by then.
Any suggestions for monitoring?

It can be an ongoing problem, it was for most of the time for me until I made sure to spend time with the soundman to make sure he gets the sax in the monitors. Best case senerio is when the place has everyone on stage on their own mix but unless you’re doing theatre’s this can be rare. If you’re going to be doing gigs ocassionally enough with this setup you could get your own personal monitor box, that’s really the only way sometimes to have full control.
