          Rock and Roll Saxophone Music

          Says Johnny,

          Rock and Roll is one of Led Zeppelin’s biggest hits from their 4th album released in 1971. It works great on saxophone because it’s really just a basic 12 bar blues done with the Zeppelin twist and patterned after the early rockers we all know and love.

          Song Key

          This saxophone version is in the key of A major. This is the same key as Led Zeppelin’s original recorded version. That means the Bb sax music chart is in B major and the Eb sax music chart is in F# major.

          The sax solo as heard in the video is included in the transcription. It revolves around the minor blues scale.

          The B Major Blues scale consists of the notes B, C♯, D, D♯, F♯, and G♯

          B maj Scale Overview

          • Notes: B – C♯ – D – D♯ – F♯ – G♯
          • Intervals: Root (1), Major 2nd (2), Minor 3rd/Blue Note (♭3), Major 3rd (3), Perfect 5th (5), Major 6th (6)
          • Formula: Whole, Half, Half, Step-and-a-half, Whole, Step-and-a-half (W H H 1½ W 1½)

          ~~~~~~ / ~~~~~~
          The B minor blues scale consists of the notes B, D, E, F, F♯, and A.
          B minor Scale Overview
          • Notes: B – D – E – F – F♯ – A
          • Intervals: 1 – ♭3 – 4 – ♭5 – 5 – ♭7
          • Formula: Built by adding the flatted fifth (the “blue note”, F) to the B minor pentatonic scale.
          The notes of the B Minor Blues Scale are B D E F F# A.
          Its key signature has 2 sharps.
          AI Overview
          “Rock and Roll” by Led Zeppelin was created spontaneously in about 15 minutes during a frustrated jam session in 1971 at Headley Grange.
          Creation and Inspiration
          • The Jam Session: While trying to finish the track “Four Sticks,” drummer John Bonham grew frustrated and started playing the famous opening drum intro to Little Richard’s 1957 song “Keep a Knockin'”.
          • Building the Track: Guitarist Jimmy Page immediately jumped in with a Chuck Berry-style guitar riff, and the rest of the band joined to build a fast-paced 12-bar blues in A.
          • Recording: The band recorded the basic track on the spot. Rolling Stones pianist Ian Stewart also contributed a driving, boogie-woogie piano part.
          • The Lyrics: Robert Plant wrote lyrics that paid tribute to 1950s dance crazes and doo-wop hits, referencing songs like The Diamonds’ “The Stroll” and The Monotones’ “(Who Wrote) The Book of Love”.
          Detail Information
          Live Performance History
          • 1972–1975: Elevated to become the explosive opening number for nearly all live shows.
          • Later Tours: Transitioned into a medley encore with “Whole Lotta Love” in 1977 and a standalone encore in 1979 and 1980. It was also featured during their 1985 Live Aid reunion.
          Lyrics
          It’s been a long time since I rock and rolled
          It’s been a long time since I did the stroll
          Ooh let me get it back, let me get it back
          Let me get it back, baby, where I come from
          It’s been a long time, been a long time
          Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time
          Yes, it has
          It’s been a long time since The Book of Love
          I can’t count the tears of a life with no love
          Carry me back, carry me back
          Carry me back, baby, where I come from, whoa-oh-oh
          It’s been a long time, been a long time
          Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time
          Oh seems so long since we walked in the moonlight
          Making vows that just can’t work right, oh yeah
          Open your arms, opens your arms
          Open your arms, baby, let love come running in, yeah
          It’s been a long time, been a long time
          Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time
          Yeah-hey, yeah-hey, yeah-hey, yeah-hey
          Ooh yeah, ooh yeah
          Ooh yeah, ooh yeah
          It’s been a long time, been a long time
          Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time
