I am a relative beginner playing a rented Yamaha student tenor now and am hoping to move up to purchase a better horn soon. In the meantime, I’ve taken Johnny’s words on the importance of a good set-up to heart. I want to upgrade and have ordered the recommended Selmer 80 C*. I want to get a good reed match with this. Should I continue to use my 2 1/2 VanDoren reds or should I experiment with different thicknesses?

As a beginner don’t go thicker than that for a while. I would stay there or even lower but try a few different brands, they do make a difference. Some brands come out swingin out of the box but some you gotta work in for a while. And don’t bother buying just one or 2 of a brand, buy a whole box because lots of reeds in every box aren’t very good, and so if you buy a couple from a box you might get 2 crappy reeds and think that brand sucks.
Buy a box, soak them all in water and play every one of them for a couple minutes each. This is how you get to know which ones feel good and which ones don’t. I have a video about reeds in the “Tips” lesson section
