Johnny, another mewbie question about reeds. I’m learning more about intonation on the sax, and more so about my YAS-52.
I think I experience what I read is common for most sax instruments- that when tuning to the middle G of the range, the lower notes will tend to be flat, and the high notes will be sharp. So tuning with the lip pressure is in order.
I have tried numerous different mouthpieces to date, and this recent discovery seems to hold true across the board for the mouthpieces I have to experiment with-
My recent favorite reed had a bit of a split/chipped area on the tip, so I decided I would trim it back about a mm, so I could hopefully still get some use out of it. What I found was that the trimmed reed now played more in tune across the range, so I didn’t have as much lip tuning to do.
Has anyone else came across this?

What you did by trimming it was to make it a thicker reed. Sounds like the reed was either super worn out or you are ready to jump up to the next number.
